A relatively unknown singer/songwriter/musician who’s been honing his craft for years, first in various bands and then as a solo artist, Mead has suffered through more than one label merger and even lost an entire album in the process. Now, forming his own label to prevent a second album from being sucked into the Music Industry Black Hole, he gives the world “Tangerine.”

Davies still owes us three more solo albums, if he’s going to catch up with his brother, Dave. But the fact that he finally managed to pull off a record of his own is good news, indeed.

Let’s not mince words here: This is great stuff.
More than Fagen’s other solo albums — 1982’s “The Nightfly” and 1993’s “Kamakiriad” — this sounds like a Steely Dan album. One could dare say it sounds more like Steely Dan than the Dan’s last two albums.

After opening with a short tap dance by one of her young friends, Texas-based singer Kincaid jumps headfirst into the title track: a bouncy number by Sylvia Lee that sounds like something Willie Nelson could have covered for his “Stardust” album.
