Full Circle

Ruf

That’s what friends are for.

Helping their bud make one righteous album of blues, rock and all the nuances between, that is. And these guys aren’t just acquaintances: Most are people Trout has worked with extensively at one point or another of his 35-year career.

Besides the different guests on each song (except for John Mayall, who appears on two), there also are celebrity appearances by drummers Richie Hayward (six tracks!) and Bill Bateman; keyboardists Danny Timms and Rob Rio; and stand-up bassist Jonny Ray Bartel. Jeff Healey’s band backs him up on his cut, as does James Harman’s rhythm section for his. And, of course, Trout’s own band the Radicals plays throughout.

Every song’s a winner, something only a high-caliber group of musicians could pull off live in the studio. Highlights include the two instrumentals, “Slap Happy” (with Bartel and Bateman) and “After Hours” (with Deacon Jones working out on the Hammond organ); “Firehouse Mama” (nothing but two acoustic resonator guitars getting crazy while Trout and Sardinas howl at the moon); the hardcore “She Takes More Than She Gives” and “Clouds on the Horizon”; and the closing facsimile of a late ’50s-early ’60s DJ signoff, courtesy WMID’s Larry Keene, who expertly incorporates a geographical overview of various blues styles.
