Road Runner

Sugar Hill

It’s been a long two and a half years since Lee’s last release, “Heartbreak Hill,” a revisiting of songs by former employer Emmylou Harris. Still, the five-time Guitar Player Magazine best country guitarist is maintaining his improved pace, issuing three studio albums in the last four years; before that, there was a 14-year dry spell.

Not bad for playing in two bands (Hogan’s Heroes and Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings); appearing at the occasional guitar festival or tribute concert; and still doing session work once in a while.

Returning from “Heartbreak Hill” to lend a hand on “Road Runner” are the two Buddys (Emmons, on pedal steel, and Miller, singing background on the title track) and Steve Fishell (as Lee’s co-producer).

It’s another excellent collection of covers from the likes of John Hiatt, Leo Kottke, Billy Burnette, Jimmy Webb, Delbert McClinton and Richard Thompson, plus something a little different this time — Lee also plays piano on all but one cut.
