Let’s not mince words here: This is great stuff.
More than Fagen’s other solo albums — 1982’s “The Nightfly” and 1993’s “Kamakiriad” — this sounds like a Steely Dan album. One could dare say it sounds more like Steely Dan than the Dan’s last two albums.
Surfdog
That’s Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, not to be confused with Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. They are two different groups — the latter having finished its four-album career in 1973, and the former releasing its debut in 2000.
Favored Nations Cool
Recorded in the studio in 2002 while on tour in Germany, and originally released in that country last year on In+Out Records, this set finds Coryell in good company: drummer Paul Wertico and bassist Marc Egan (both of whom were sidemen for Pat Metheny, although separately).
The premise: an instrumental banjo-bass duo album, recorded live over the course of three tours.
