Dwight Sings Buck

New West/Via

Yoakam, who rekindled the Bakersfield sound in the late 1980s to early ’90s, pays tribute to recently departed mentor and friend Buck Owens with a thoughtful song selection, bolstered by young-gun players and just enough twists to ensure that fans of both country icons will be grinnin’ when they hear the pickin’ and especially the singin’.

There are eight No. 1 songs, such as “Love’s Gonna Live Here” (with an eyebrow-raising “Hard Day’s Night” guitar-strum ending), and four tracks that made the Top 5: “Above and Beyond,” from Owens’ 1961 self-titled debut (tweaked here by subtle Elvis-like vocal effects); “Foolin’ Around,” from 1961’s “Buck Owens Sings Harlan Howard” (which discerning ears will notice has a double rather than single drum stop); and the early singles “Under Your Spell Again” (1959) and “Excuse Me” (1960).

Also included are three signature Owens songs that somehow missed the Top 100: “Down on the Corner of Love” (from 1962’s “You’re for Me,” featuring a touch of electric sitar), “Cryin’ Time” (from “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail,” 1965) and a slow-motion “Close Up the Honky Tonks” (originally on the 1964 LP “Together Again/My Heart Skips a Beat,” with congas!)

Dwight’s band includes guitarist Eddie Perez (Mavericks, Jim Lauderdale) and Joshua Grange (Ramsay Midwood, Rocco Deluca, Creekdippers) on pedal steel.
