Who does Lauderdale think he is, Ryan Adams? Actually, when it comes to prolific, he’s about to best Adams’ feat of three albums in a year. “Honey Songs” is the second in a trio planned to span a nine-month period.
First was September’s Grammy-winning “Bluegrass Diaries.” Last in the trilogy will be another collaboration with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter (following 2004’s “Headed for the Hills”). In between comes this one with the Dream Players: James Burton, Steve Sheehan, Al Perkins, Glen D. Hardin, Gary Tallent and Ron Tutt; also on hand are backing vocalists Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Patty Loveless and Kelly Hogan.
After all the collaborations and bluegrass, it’s great to have Renaissance man Lauderdale back with a country album, and kind of a country-rock one at that. From the Jerry Reed-style boogie opener to the closing old-school honky tonker, between the fantastic songwriting and the world-class musicianship, this really is a dream album.
Especially noteworthy among this not-a-clinker-in-the-bunch batch: “I Hope You’re Happy,” a twangfest with an irresistible chorus; the musically humorous but lyrically serious intervention piece, “Hittin’ It Hard”; “The Daughter of Majestic Sage,” an electric-and-steel tour de force; and “Stingray,” which sounds like the theme song to a classic TV Western – except the setting is underwater!
