Hope and Desire

Verve Forecast

Blues rocker Tedeschi opted to go a different route for her fourth album: a collection of soulful covers.

She let producer Joe Henry talk her into not using her regular band and instead enlisting a group of session players. She also was persuaded to put down her guitar and let Doyle Bramhall II handle the axe work. To liven things up a bit, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Tedeschi’s husband, Derek Trucks, were brought in as guests.

All proved to be good calls. Tedeschi, able to concentrate on singing, reveals herself to be an excellent interpreter of material by a wide-ranging group of artists: (in chronological order) the Rolling Stones, Fontella Bass, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Candi StatonIris DeMent, Otis Redding, the Four Tops, Donny Hathaway, Richie Havens and Percy Mayfield.

The convergence of emotive singing, fine musicianship and impressive song selection (the source versions of these songs would comprise an excellent anthology) make “Hope and Desire” a delightfully unexpected success.
