Low Country Blues

Rounder

allmanThe album title refers to the Georgia coastal area where he lives, and a few country blues covers are included, but Allman’s latest in 14 years could have been called “Low Town and Country Blues.”

It’s 11 old blues covers spanning urban and rural genres, plus one original co-written with fellow Allman Brothers Band member Warren Haynes. Ten of the covers were picked by Allman from a batch of 20 provided by producer T Bone Burnett, while one was Allman’s personal selection (Muddy Waters’ “I Can’t Be Satisfied”).

Five tracks feature horns (the “town”) and many of the rest are showcases for Doyle Bramhall II’s slide guitar (the “country”). Rounding out the core band are Jay Bellerose on drums, Dennis Crouch on upright bass and Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack on piano.

Allman occasionally contributes his trademark organ, as well as acoustic rhythm guitar; Burnett periodically plays guitar; and Colin Linden adds a nice touch of dobro on Skip James’ “Devil Got My Woman.”

“Low Country Blues” has been in the can since early summer, but Allman wanted something to look forward to while he recovered from the liver transplant he’d been waiting three years for.

It’s good to finally hear him in a non-ABB context again, and his manager’s suggestion to work with Burnett proved to be an excellent one. In fact, this might be Allman’s best solo disc since his first, 1973’s “Laid Back.”gnm_end_bug
